Child with braces

Your child has been wearing braces for a while now, but recently they started complaining about pain in one particular tooth. After taking them to the dentist, you found out that they a cavity, and unfortunately the only way to successfully treat the tooth is to temporarily remove the brackets and wires that are in the way. This can seriously disrupt your child’s orthodontic treatment, and the procedure itself will probably be less than enjoyable for them. To avoid the consequences of cavities, keep these 5 tips in mind to help your little one protect their precious grin.

1. Take a Little Extra Time While Brushing

Have you heard that most dentists recommend brushing for at least two minutes at a time? With traditional braces, that actually might not be enough. The metal brackets will provide plenty of hiding places for the food debris and bacteria that can cause decay. Thus, you should supervise your child to make sure they’re brushing as thoroughly as possible and reaching every nook and cranny of their braces as well as their teeth.

2. Learn a New Flossing Technique

Braces make it extremely difficult to use dental floss, but luckily there are a few different products that your child might find easier to use. For example, a nylon-coated interdental brush can help your little one safely remove the plaque between their teeth without damaging their brackets or wires. Your dentist can recommend other possible substitutes for traditional floss.

3. Go Easy on the Sugar

Sugar that accumulates on metal brackets can dramatically increase your child’s risk for cavities. You don’t completely cut your child off from candy or other sweet treats, but sugary snacks absolutely need to be enjoyed in moderation. When they do indulge, make sure they wash their mouths with a glass of water first.

4. Remember Their Progress Checks

Every few weeks, your child will need to return to the dentist to have their braces adjusted and to confirm that the treatment is going smoothly. These visits are also a good chance for the dentist to check for cavities so that they can be treated as early as possible.

5. Ask About Invisalign

If you don’t want braces to complicate your child’s oral hygiene, ask whether Invisalign might be an option instead. The Invisalign system gradually moves the teeth with a series of clear aligners that – unlike braces – can be removed to allow for normal brushing and flossing. Typically, teenagers are the best candidates for this type of orthodontic treatment.

By following these tips, your child can enjoy a decay-free orthodontic process, and they’ll be able to enjoy their straighter, dazzling smile without issue. Call your dentist for additional hygiene tips to keep your little one’s braces clean!
