Do you have a little one at home? Just like most things, their early years of dental health may not go as planned. In fact, it’s very normal for children to have teeth fall out prematurely, or even have unfortunate dental emergencies that lead to losing a tooth. If you have a little one with a lost tooth, they may need a space maintainer. Read on to learn what this is and why it’s important for your child to receive one from your expert dentist.

What is a Space Maintainer?

A space maintainer is an appliance that your dentist custom-makes, typically out of acrylic. They can be made removeable or permanently cemented to your child’s mouth. These are made to keep the space open and available where they lost their primary tooth to allow for their permanent one to grow in properly. There are two different types of space maintainers for children:

  • Removeable: These removeable space maintainers are similar to orthodontic appliances and will usually be made of acrylic.
  • Fixed: There are a variety of fixed space maintainers and your dentist will decide which one is best for your little one after a consultation.

Why is it Important for My Child to Receive a Space Maintainer?

Your child’s primary teeth are vital to the development of their jawbone, how they speak, their social skills, and especially the alignment of their smile. When they lose a tooth early, a space maintainer holds the place of their tooth, allowing for their permanent tooth to grow in healthier and less crooked. This appliance also allows them to maintain proper speaking.

Once your dentist makes their space maintainer, it may take a few days for them to get used to it. Additionally, if they have a fixed appliance, it’s important that they avoid chewing gum or sticky candy that can get caught on the appliance. It’s also more important than ever to maintain a good oral healthcare routine like daily brushing and flossing

For cases of multiple missing teeth or lost teeth due to congenital diseases, your dentist may recommend a denture. That’s why it’s important to take your children to your dentist if they lose a tooth prematurely for a consultation. They will be able to determine whether or not they need a space maintainer and provide the treatment plan that yields the best results.
