Do you currently have braces or have you recently had them taken off? After investing a considerable amount of time and money into this treatment, it’s important that you do everything that you can to make the results last. That’s why it’s imperative to wear an orthodontic retainer after straightening your smile. Keep reading to see why it’s always worth it to take the extra step of using a retainer after your orthodontic treatment.

Why Should I Wear a Retainer?

Depending on the type of treatment that you receive, orthodontics can take from 10 months to multiple years. This length of time is necessary to gradually shift your teeth into place for a beautifully straight smile. While this gradual movement helps your teeth stay in place compared to if they were shifted rapidly, your teeth still have the potential to move back to their original crooked positions after treatment. Thankfully, your dentist can provide personalized retainers that are discreet and comfortable to wear, allowing you to maintain your new and improved smile. With just a little work after treatment, you can set yourself up for a lifetime of straight teeth.

How Long Do I Have to Wear My Retainer?

It is recommended that you wear your retainer for up to 12 months after receiving traditional braces. You may be required to wear them at least 12 to 22 hours a day during this first year. After, you can switch to only wearing them 3 to 5 times a week at night. This is a habit that you should maintain for life because it will prevent your teeth from becoming more crooked as you get older. As you age, your teeth can slowly shift forward and inward.

Caring for Your Retainer

Because most retainers are made with clear plastic, it’s a good idea to clean it regularly and care for it to ensure that it stays translucent. This will allow you to discreetly wear your retainer without any stains or discoloration. You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild, clear hand soap to wash your retainer. You should also avoid using hot water because it could permanently warp the plastic, influencing the effectiveness of your retainer. Lastly, if you lose or break it, contact your dentist right away. They will provide you with a new retainer as soon as possible to keep your treatment on track.

Are you ready for a straight and beautiful smile? Be sure to use your retainer as your dentist instructs for the most effective and efficient treatment.
