If you thought the desire to have properly aligned teeth is a recent trend, then you’ll be surprised to know that the history of dental braces in Glenpool takes root in antiquity. As you read on, a local dentist explains how the modern braces we’re familiar with came about and how they can help you achieve the smile of your dreams!

How Do Braces Work?

Dental braces, as we know them in present time, consist of metal or ceramic brackets, bands and wires that work together to apply the necessary tension to move teeth to their correct position. After the fixtures are placed, patients usually visit every four weeks to have the wires adjusted and for the dentist to monitor their progress.

While other methods of bite correction have emerged in recent times, dental braces still remain the gold standard for orthodontic treatment. How did it become the most trusted form of straightening teeth, though?

The Early Ages of Braces

Historians and archeologists have discovered that the use of some form of dental braces dates back to around 400-300 BC. There is even evidence of the father of modern medicine, Hippocrates, and the noted philosopher, Aristotle, contemplating different ways to straighten teeth.

The origin of braces could still be even earlier, though, as archeologists have found mummies with metal bands wrapped around their teeth, which could have been a primitive form of orthodontics.

Braces in the Age of Enlightenment

The 18th century would bring about a new era in human history called the Age of Enlightenment, a time of marvelous inventions and discoveries. The scientific and medical breakthroughs were experienced in the world of orthodontics as well.

A major advancement is accredited to a French dentist named Pierre Fauchard, who invented a device called the “Bandeau,” which is considered to be the forerunner to palatal expanders (devices that widen an arch of teeth for better occlusion).

The Next Big Step for Braces

Orthodontic treatment received another boost in the early part of the 19th century from a dentist named Delabarre, who invented the wire crib, an apparatus that was placed over the teeth to encourage them to move.

Mid-century, another expansion in the process would occur with two dentists: Maynard and Tucker. The former is considered the creator of gum elastics while the latter developed a way to make the elastics using rubber tubing.

Big Changes in the 20th Century

One of the greatest contributions to orthodontic care in the 20th century was the development of a classification system for bite problems, such as overbite, under bite and cross bite. This simple breakthrough introduced a greater degree of customization and quality to the creation of dental braces.
