Accidents happen, and sometimes things can get misplaced if we’re not careful. It’s easy enough to lose small items when you can see them, but when it comes to your Invisalign aligners, they can be even easier to misplace. That’s because these clear trays have a way of blending in with their surroundings. In fact, that’s part of their appeal. But what happens if you can’t find yours and it’s not time to switch to a new pair yet? Here’s what you should do if you lose your Invisalign aligner!
Step One: Breathe
It’s natural to panic when you lose something important, however don’t panic if you lose your aligner! First, retrace your steps. Could you have put it down on a countertop, dropped it in the sink, or left it on a lunch tray? If you look around and still can’t find it, proceed to step number two.
Step Two: Act
Your next steps will depend on where you are in your treatment process. The most important thing to do is call your orthodontist for a game plan.
If you have only a few days to go until you’re ready to switch to a new aligner, chances are your orthodontist will let you switch early. However, if you have a bit longer to go, you may be given other instructions:
- If you have recently switched aligners, you may be able to go back to the previous one temporarily.
- Your orthodontist may order you a new replacement aligner. Many practices give you two free spares to redeem in emergencies throughout your treatment.
Step 3: Change Your Strategy
Finally, if you haven’t already, it may be advisable to change your strategy for removing your aligners. Here are a few tips to help prevent losses from occurring:
- Always keep your aligners in their case when you take them out. This will help keep them clean and germ free, and you are more likely to see the case than the aligner itself.
- Never put your aligners down on a lunch tray or table. Do not wrap them in napkins or tissue that can be cleared away or forgotten.
- When you’re at home, take out your aligners in the same place every time.
- Don’t drop them unprotected into a purse or backpack. Make sure they are protected in their case.
Remember, clear aligners are hard to see, and easy to lose. If you should misplace one, don’t be ashamed to call your orthodontist as soon as possible for a plan of action. Simply going without aligners until it’s time to switch is a bad idea and can set your treatment back weeks or more!
