As summer break is coming to a close, students are gearing up for a new (and unusual) school year. But before they strap on their backpacks or head downstairs to open up the laptop, you’ll likely find them soaking in the last few days (or weeks) of summer vacation. This may mean indulging in unhealthy snacks or forgoing their oral hygiene routines, both of which can spell disaster for a child wearing braces. Although the hot, sunny days of freedom are winding down, there is still time to avoid a potential delay in treatment. Here are 4 tips for braces in Glenpool that will be sure to keep your child’s evolving smile on track.

Stick with the Routine

It’s easy for a child to fall out of their normal oral hygiene routine throughout the summer. Whether it is sleeping in or staying up late, the normalcy of brushing, flossing, and rinsing in the morning and at night often falls to the wayside. Unfortunately, this can lead to plaque and food particles sticking to metal brackets and wires and teeth. While it is fine to let them stay in bed a while longer in the mornings or stay up a bit later than usual to watch a movie, make sure they take care of cleaning their teeth twice a day for the full two minutes.

Avoid Sugary Beverages

If you think keeping soda away from your child will protect them against cavities, guess again. Juices and sports drinks are known to be filled with large amounts of sugar and can wreak havoc on a child wearing braces. Bacteria will feed on these sugars and produce harmful acids that can eat away at their tooth enamel. Over time, you can expect cavities to form. While these may taste delicious, nothing will quench their thirst quite like water, so make sure they’re staying hydrated with this safe and dentist-approved beverage.

Be Mindful of Snacking

Unfortunately, this summer has resulted in kids spending more time at home than anywhere else. Spending most of their time playing in the backyard or watching TV on the couch, you may find them to be engaging in mindless snacking. When choosing between yogurt or a bag of potato chips, which do you think your child will choose? For a kid who is receiving orthodontics in Glenpool, it’s important they eat foods that will not damage their braces and keep their teeth and gums healthy. Make sure you’re keeping nutritious alternatives around the house and help them avoid anything that could cause you to make an emergency trip to the dentist’s office.

Keep Regular Appointments

When your child needs to visit their dentist in Glenpool, they likely want you in the treatment room with them. After all, this helps to decrease any anxiety during their appointment. Fortunately, while their braces are receiving necessary adjustments, both of you can enjoy a fun and exciting experience with Moviedontics! Seated in a movie-theater style room, you and your child can watch a family-friendly movie while the dentist and their team work their magic on your little one’s smile.

Summertime doesn’t have to cause a delay in your child’s orthodontic treatment. By remembering these helpful tips, their smile can successfully remain on the right path to better, more beautiful results!
