Traditional braces are one of the most reliable ways to straighten teeth. Generations of people have benefited from them — and generations of people also know that it can be a bit uncomfortable when braces get tightened. What can you do to cope with the discomfort and make sure that your orthodontic treatment experience is as easy as possible? Here are some useful tips from an experienced dentist.

Take a Pain Relieving Medication

In most cases, an over the counter pain reliever is able to provide adequate relief from braces discomfort. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen (Tylenol) are both good choices. Be sure to follow dosing directions, especially if you are giving the medication to your child. Also, do not rub the medication on the gums because doing so could cause chemical burns.

Apply Orthodontic Wax

If a particular part of your braces is causing discomfort, you can apply a bit of orthodontic relief wax to create a barrier between your braces and the soft tissue in your mouth. Simply roll the wax into a ball and flatten against your braces. On the day when you get your braces tightened, your dentist should give you some wax. If you need more, you can pick it up at a local pharmacy.

Use a Peroxyl Rinse

If you develop oral sores, a peroxyl rinse may be able to help. This type of mouthwash has a hydrogen peroxide-based formula and serves as a mild antiseptic. It is effective for relieving minor irritation in the mouth from orthodontic appliances, canker sores, and cold sores. Many different brands produce peroxyl rinses; they are easy to find at most pharmacies.

Adjust Your Diet

Certain types of food can exacerbate braces-related discomfort. For the first day or two after you get your braces tightened, you should be careful to avoid hard or crunchy foods, like potato chips and raw vegetables. Sticking to softer foods, like mashed potatoes, soup, yogurt, and pudding, can help you be as comfortable as possible. It is even okay to indulge in some ice cream; its cold temperature may feel good on the sore parts of your mouth.

Pain and sensitivity that are the result of getting your braces tightened should go away on its own after a few days, and the above tips can be very helpful during the adjustment period. However, if you experience extreme pain or prolonged discomfort, give your dentist a call. They’ll be happy to help you cope with the problem. They want your treatment experience to be as easy as possible!
